Lip Enhancement/ Sculpting >> More Information

Injectable lip enhancement is the procedure of strategically injecting dermal fillers into parts of the lip and surrounding lip areas to enhance, shape, or add volume to the lips and reduce surrounding wrinkles. Volume loss of the lips occurs naturally with time, and replacing this lost volume can result in more youthful looking lips.
Enhancing the lips is not always about enhancing just the vermilion or red part of the lips. Filling around the lips may be just as important as filling the lips themselves. For example, correcting the fine upper lip lines, or lifting the corners of the mouth can all be just as important as enhancement of the lips themselves. Correcting one without the other can lead to an imbalance in the overall appearance of the lips.

How is injectable lip enhancement performed?
Injectable lip enhancement is usually performed with dermal fillers. There are many types of dermal fillers and the results can be temporary or permanent depending on the type of dermal filler used. Each one has its pros and cons and will suit different peopleís needs.
The first step is a careful discussion withone of our cosmetic physicians who will talk to you about what you want to achieve with your lips. It is important to realise that the lips you have are the foundations that you can build on and cannot be completely changed, but simply enhanced to form a fuller, more defined, and youthful version of your lips.
Secondly, anaesthetic is administered. This can be done topically, by injection, or both. This will ensure that the procedure is as comfortable as possible for you.
The dermal filler is then injected into the different parts of the lips.

How long do the treatments take?
The treatment is immediate and takes approximately 30 minutes.

How long does it last?
Lipsculpting/enhancement lasts up to one year, depending on the area being treated, the depth of the lines, the condition of the skin and the lifestyle of the individual. Most people return at 6 – 9 months for a topup.

How it works?
Lip enhancement can be carried out in two steps; pouting and contouring. To create a more pronounced mouth and fuller lips, It is injected into the inside of the upper and/or lower lip. This is often combined with the marking of the contour of the lip by injecting the gel along the lip line. Redefining this edge leads to a more youthful and appealing look. It also prevents lipstick "bleeding" into the small lines around the lips. The lines that go up towards the nose (philtrum ridges) can be defined by injecting into them. To achieve the optimal result, a combination of these steps is often used.

Where does it go when it is broken down?
The Hyaluronic acid fillers used are metabolised slowly into the skin. Once broken down it passes through the liver quickly and is broken down into carbon dioxide and water. Lip Enhancement is safer because it contains no animal proteins, allergens or chemicals.

Possible side effects
After lip enhancement, the main side effect is swelling of the lips. This may persist from 3 to 14 days. Usually injection of the lip body produces more swelling than the border. The type of dermal filler used also determines to an extent the degree of swelling.
The side effects of the treatment may also include redness and occasional bruising.Other side effects may include minor lumps, itching or tenderness, which usually resolve quickly. After treatment you may have slightly pinker skin and some swelling .
Occasionally, lip enhancement may cause cold sores to reappear. If this occurs, you need to notify your doctor of this and be prescribed an anti-viral tablet.
.
What will I look like if I decide against further treatment? Will I be more wrinkled?
The skin will return to its original state prior to treatment if you decide against further treatments.

Can I go straight back to work after treatment?
Yes but for the first treatment it is probably better to schedule your appointment for the end of the day and preferably the end of the week

Post Injection Care
During the first 24- 48 hours after treatment you may experience redness, swelling and tenderness in the treated areas. These reactions are normal and resolve quickly and spontaneously.
The following guidelines are recommended during the first 24 – 48 hours following injection treatment with dermal fillers
It is best if you are able to keep treated areas free of cosmetics, and avoid using moisturisers, and active products containing AHA [Alpha Hydroxy Acids / Glycolics], BHA [Beta Hydroxy Acids], or Retinoid gels or creams.
You may apply light water-based make-up/ mineral make-up  where necessary
Apply cool compresses to the treated areas to relieve swelling and possible bruising
Avoid drinking alchohol as it opens up blood vessels and may increase brusing or swelling
Avoid strenous exercise, and extremes of hot and cold
Drink regularly through out the day.
Avoid taking blood thinning medicines, such as Aspirin / Disprin
Should you feel or see any lumps in the treated areas once swelling has subsided it is recommended that you gently massage the area carefully with clean fingers. If these lumps persist, you may need to have them corrected by your treating doctor .

Do not have facials, facial waxing, Glycolic or AHA peels, Liquid Nitrogen [dry ice] or Laser Treatments for 10 – 14 days after treatment.
Should you be concerned or be experiencing prolonged redness, swelling, tenderness or any other symptoms please contact your treating physician
