What is a peel? A peel regenerates the skin, often making it smoother with fewer wrinkles. The peel is used to induce a controlled wound to the skin which stimulates collagen production and reduces pigmentation, sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure is typically used on the face but can be used on other parts of the body, including the neck and hands.
At Jeunesse after professional analysis and consultation we tailor treatments specific to each individual clients needs.
They vary from light rejuvenating treatments to medium depth corrective peels.
Skin conditions suitable for a CosMedix Results Rx peel treatment includes:
- • Acne
- • Enlarged pores
- • Hyperpigmentation
- • Rosacea
- • Hypersensitivity
- • Sun damage
- • Premature - ageing
Peels can be used without prior preparation of the skin but for optimum results prep and recovery kits should be used as advised by your skin consultant.
Peels are available as one-time treatments but deliver optimum results when delivered in a series of treatments.
How are the CosMedix peels different? Traditional chemical peels typically consist of chemical solutions applied to the skin to form flakes or blisters that eventually peel off. This painful, old technology process destroys healthy tissue, forcing the body to heal itself. Instead, CosMedix’s chirally correct, non-traumatic peels succeed by stimulating healthy change. The soothing collagen therapy enhances skin’s appearance resulting in a beautiful, renewed complexion.
Tell me more about being chirally correct... Chirally correct chemical peels are associated with better ingredients, less downtime, and fewer unfavorable side effects than other chemical peels. No anesthesia is required for chirally correct chemical peels and they are safe enough to be repeated bi-monthly.
.
How are chemical peels performed?
The skin is thoroughly cleansed twice, with an appropriate cleanser. It is then degreased with a toner and Vaseline is used to protect the peel from entering the eye. Your eyes should be closed during the procedure.
The chemical peel solution is then applied to the face. The procedure is timed, and you will be asked about your comfort level. A fan may be present to help cool the skin for comfort during the peel. The peel is the removed. A neutralising solution is applied with certain peels. A soothing solution may be then applied. Followed by application of sunscreen.
Who should not have peels ?
Clients who have recently had a course of oral isotretinoin or isotane should avoid chemical peels for at least 6 months before undergoing medium or deep chemical peels. Also patients who have had a recent face or browlift should wait at least 6 months.
Patients with a history of, or a current infection of herpes simplex virus (cold sores) should ensure that their doctor is aware of this before chemical peeling. If there is an active infection present, you may be asked to wait until it has passed prior to having a chemical peel. Also if you have a history of cold sores, you doctor may place you on anti-viral medication as a prophylaxis to an outbreak during your treatment.
If you have a history of keloid (thick, pigmented scars) you may also be excluded from all but the most superficial of peels.
What are possible the complications or side effects of chemical peels?
Complications are not common .The deeper the peel, the higher the rate of complications and the longer the recovery. Most superficial peels are safe and effective. Medium and deep peels require more experience from the treatment provider. The better prepared the skin is for the peel and adherence to post-peel care instructions significantly reduces the risks.
The deeper the peel, the longer it will take to recover . The downtime can vary from a few hours to a week. Careful attention to the doctor’s instructions is imperative.
• Swelling - usually lasting up to three days, but it is usually only associated with the deeper peels.
• Pain - this is only really seen with the deeper peels and may last for a few hours only
• Redness – usually mild amount of redness that persists for a few days only.
• Itchiness - This is only common after medium and deep chemical peels.
• Skin infection(pus oozing, fever)
• Appearance of a cold sore on the lips or any portion of the peeled area. (Note: the cold sore can spread if not cared for immediately.)
• Allergic reaction or irritation to any of the creams or medications.
• Wind or sun sensitivity
• Extreme reactions such as scarring or keloids. Scarring is more likely the deeper the peel.
• Increase or decrease in skin pigmentation which does not blend with normal skin after healing from the treatment
• Acne/milia – This can be triggered by the peel as well as the rich creams used in post care
How do I reduce my risk of complication rate from chemical peels?
At Jeunesse our doctors do a full assessment & individualise the treatment by choosing the appropriate peel to suit your skin type & concerns. This is a very important part of reducing the rate of complications. Darker skinned patients in particular, especially those of Asian, Indian, Maori , or African backgrounds are more prone to pigmentation. Sometimes our doctors recommended the use of hydroquinone and tretinoin before the peel which help to reduce the rate of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark areas) post peel which can be continued after the peel (2 weeks after) to further reduce pigmentation problems. Reducing your sun exposure also significantly reduces pigmentation problems.
How can I prepare myself for a chemical peel?
At Jeunesse all patient are given a preparation programme to use for at least 2 weeks before any peel is performed. This serves to help with uniform penetration of the peel, accelerated healing, and to reduce post-peel complications such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation The products include commencement of a retinoic acid such as Refine 4% from Cosmedix as well as a lightening agent such as hydroquinone, kojic acid or arbutin (as found in Lightening from Cosmedix). ation
What kind of skin peels are there? CosMedix offers Correct Peels categorized as “Today’s Peels” and “Tomorrow’s Peels.” Today’s Peels use natural Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA) to freshen and exfoliate the skin by removing dead cells in order to produce new cell growth.
