Belkyra^®, a treatment for double chin, recently joined the list of cosmetic treatments available in New Zealand. You may have probably already heard about the fat melting injections which was approved by the FDA as “Kybella”. It was approved by the TGA in 2017 as Belkyra^®.

Double chin or chin fat is a common concern for many people, and recently the only option to get rid of this pesky fat was surgery. Belkyra^®now offers a new non surgical treatment option, that is quick and non- invasive. When injected under the chin, Belkyra^® works by bursting the fat cells like a balloon. The fat released by the fat cells is then removed by the body via the blood stream and liver.

BELKYRA® injection is a prescription medicine containing 10 mg/mL deoxycholic acid. It is used for the improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with fat below the jaws in adults.Do not use in people allergic to this medicine, with infection at site of injection, pregnancy, and lactation. Possible side effects include headaches, difficulty swallowing, nausea, skin tightness, hypertension, injection site bruising/ pain/ swelling/ numbness/ redness/ tingling/ hardness/ itching/ discolouration/ formation of small areas of hardness/warmth and injection site nerve injury. BELKYRA® treatment is not funded on the New Zealand Pharmaceutical Schedule. You will need to pay for this medicine. Normal Doctors visit fees apply. BELKYRA® treatment should be administered only by trained medical professionals.
